Nationwide’s Pet Insurance Coverage Goes Exotic
Nationwide took an additional step to provide wider access to pet insurance by launching new plans for owners of exotic pets. Similar to cats and dogs, animals such as parrots, water dragons, rabbits, turtles, potbellied pigs, and hedgehogs need veterinary care.
At times, providing veterinary services to exotic pets can take a strain on the owners’ finances. As such, Nationwide — the first and largest pet health insurer in the US — designed a new coverage plan specifically for avian and exotic pets. Currently, Nationwide provides coverage for more than 780,000 pets across the US. Their medical plans are available in all 50 states, covering multiple medical conditions as well as accidents and injuries.
According to Heidi Sirota, Nationwide’s Chief Pet Officer, they are well-aware of the fact that 15% of US pet owners also have a bird or exotic animal as a pet. These animals deserve proper care too — hence why they launched the first-ever avian and exotic insurance plan in the US.
Their newest pet insurance coverage can reimburse up to 90% of eligible veterinary expenses. Such expenses cover the most common medical conditions for exotic animals; policyholders also have the option to reimburse for preventative care. Aside from their comprehensive pet insurance coverage, the Ohio-based insurer provides insurance policies to homeowners, drivers, farmers, boat owners, and many others. Moreover, their wide-ranging financial products include annuities and mutual funds; excess and surplus, specialty and surety; as well as public and private sector retirement plans.
