Pet Insurance Review

Types of Progressive Pet Insurance Plans

Progressive Pet Insurance offers coverage to pets that are seven weeks old and above. It is one of the very few pet insurance companies that do not have an upper age limit for pets, which is beneficial for pet parents with pets aged 15 years old or even more. But keep in mind that premiums for older pets cost significantly more than premiums for younger pets.

There are several different types of pet insurance policies that Progressive offers:

Best Benefit Accident and Illness Plan

This is the most comprehensive pet insurance policy covering accidental injuries and illnesses, ranging from minor to severe. It includes:

  • Accidents
  • Illnesses like pet hereditary conditions
  • Pet chronic conditions
  • Pet cancer care
  • Pet emergency care
  • Specialty care
  • Vet exam fee with qualifying plans
  • Pet prescription drug coverage
  • Pet medicine injection
  • Lab testing
  • Acupuncture and chiropractic
  • Diagnostic testing including x-rays, MRI, and CT scans
  • Outpatient care
  • Surgery (other than cosmetic surgery) and hospitalization
  • Pet physical therapy and pet rehabilitation
  • Pet prosthetics and mobility aid

It also offers three plans:

Essential Plan: The Essential Plan is a basic plan that includes coverage for all injuries and accidents up to $5,000 every year.

Plus Plan: The Plus plan offers more coverage and caps reimbursement at $10,000 and covers vet exams and alternative therapies.

Elite Plan: The Elite plan is the most expensive and covers everything from the Essential and Plus plans and also offers chiropractic and acupuncture, rehabilitate visits, vet visits, and pet prescription medication coverage.

Accident Only Plan

With this pet accident insurance for cats and dogs, pet parents can only reimburse the costs of accidents. This plan is designed for people with a limited budget and includes coverage for:

  • Broken bones
  • Bite wounds
  • Accidental ingestion of harmful or toxic substances
  • Lacerations
  • Claw wounds from other animals

This pet accident insurance plan does not cover any illnesses. It also comes with a flat monthly premium of $9 for dogs and $6 for cats, a $250 annual deductible, a $10,000 payout cap, and 90% deductibles.

Wellness Routine Care Plan

Progressive Wellness Routine Care plan can be purchased individually or in conjunction with other primary insurance packages. It covers extra costs, like:

  • Wellness examination and checkups
  • Pet bloodwork lab testing
  • Dental cleaning
  • Vaccination
  • Pet parasite treatment for heartworm, ticks, and fleas.
  • Pet alternative medicine and therapies

Progressive Pet Wellness Insurance offers only two levels of routine care:

Essential Wellness: The Essential Wellness plan costs about $16 per month and covers wellness exams, heartworm testing, neutering and spaying, and other preventive and routine health care procedures. The annual limit for this add-on is $305.

Best Wellness: The Best Wellness Plan costs about $26 per month and offers the same coverage options as the Essential plan but adds an allowance for up to $150 for dental cleaning. All in all, the total reimbursement allowed per year under this plan is $535.

Coverage Limits

You can choose a deductible for Progressive Pet Insurance accidental and illness plans, ranging from $50 to $1000. The annual reimbursement limits are also flexible and offer 70%, 80%, and 90% reimbursement percentages. Pet parents can choose an annual limit of $5,000 or unlimited.

Comparison With Competitors

Progressive Pet Insurance vs Embrace

Like Progressive, Embrace pet insurance also offers cover accidents and illnesses. However, it does not have a wellness plan, like Progressive. Rather, it has a type of savings account known as the Embrace Wellness Rewards program which allows pet parents to spread their pet’s preventive and wellness care expenses over the year.

However, if you are looking for discounted plans, Embrace offers the most choices, particularly for pet parents in New York. Embrace also offers a Diminishing Deductible for healthy pets, and if you don’t file a claim in a year, you will be given $50 off in the next year.

Progressive Pet Insurance vs. Healthy Paws

Unlike Progressive, Healthy Paws pet insurance does not cover preventive or wellness care. But the company is known as one of the very best pet insurance providers in the industry. It also offers lifetime pet insurance policies and excellent coverage without any payout limits.

Healthy Paws also covers hip dysplasia for pets under six years of age. Pets can also be enrolled up to 14 years of age, but Progressive takes the cake in this department as it gives no upper age limits for the enrollment of cats and dogs. However, unlike Progressive, Healthy Paws does not cover the examination fee of the vet.

Plus, it also has a 15-day accident waiting period as opposed to Progressive’s three days.

Pros & Cons

The Pros

  • You have to pay only an annual deductible per year rather than a deductible per year.
  • Provide a lot of flexible policy options.
  • Claim processing is very fast.
  • There is no upper limit for pet insurance coverage for cats and dogs which is something that only very few insurance providers offer.
  • You also have the option to add exam fee coverage.
  • Offer wellness routine care as well.
  • Multiple options for saving.

The Cons

  • Waiting periods are common, but other pet insurance companies offer shorter waiting times.
  • The website does not offer many details about its insurance coverage. You can find more information on the Pets Best website, but this is not mentioned.
  • It also does not cover burial or cremation costs.
